LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- It’s time for Team XL to lace up their running shoes as a way to raise support for veterans in need. The 2017 Devil Dash 5k/10k is less than a week away, set for May 13, 2017, on Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas.
The Devil Dash is a fundraiser fun run for the Air Warrior Courage Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps veterans in need. Entry fees are $25 for those running the 5k, and $30 for those running the 10k.
Participants will meet outside of the wing headquarters building at 8:30 a.m., and the event will start at around 9 a.m. The run will take participants down to the flight line, down the runways and back.
“It’s a fun time and a novel run,” said 1st Lt. Nick Atkins, 434th Flying Training Squadron instructor pilot and event coordinator. “When else can you run on the runways?”
Atkins added that the run is equally important because of its support of the Air Warrior Courage Foundation; a foundation that has helped Laughlin directly after last year’s hail storm, giving aid to Airmen left without a vehicle due to the damage.
“It’s run almost entirely by veterans,” Atkins said. “They’ll be there running with us, too. The charity is entirely non-profit, and all the money goes back to the communities.”
People on and off base are welcome to the event, and can sign up online.
“It’s really easy to sign up,” Atkins said. “Visit active.com and search ‘Devil Dash,’ and it should be the first option.” Off-base runners will need to sign up at least a week in advance to gain base access, he added.
Last year’s Devil Dash had a turnout of about 125 runners, and this year Atkins hopes to have a turnout of around 250 people.
Participants can sign up and donate the same day, and credit cards are accepted. Entry fees include a t-shirt.
