LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- U.S. Airmen gathered at the base’s commissary in support of the base’s initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle at Laughlin Air Force Base, June 13, 2017.
The Healthy Lifestyle Festival was aimed at providing Laughlin’s families with access to resources that will keep them fit. Ms. Wignelia Cruz-Gonzalez, Laughlin Commissary produce manager and event coordinator, is confident that the event was successful.
“The Healthy Lifestyle Festival is something that the commissary supports to promote staying fit and healthy,” said Cruz-Gonzalez.
Twenty organizations brought both information and entertainment to the event. Some of the contributors are the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Fit Bar, base health exercise physiology office and the 47th Force Support Squadron. All were aimed at providing resources to help Airmen and their families make healthy, informed decisions.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to get together and support Laughlin’s families,” said Cruz-Gonzalez. “Each individual organization provides knowledge that allows people to better prepare themselves and make a better path to healthy living.”
With more than 100 attendees, Cruz-Gonzalez said the event was a success. Stemming from this success, Laughlin’s Airmen are now better equipped to live healthier lifestyles.
From proper hand-washing procedures to spiritual fitness information from the chapel, experts across the base showed festival goers what resources are available and how it can improve their lives.
Cruz-Gonzalez said she is excited to keep this knowledge flowing and has future plans to host another Healthy Lifestyle Festival, which the Airmen are already looking forward to.
Master Sgt. Edward Slaughter, 47th Medical Group first sergeant, attended the event, and said the event was well worth his time because it provided valuable information.
Slaughter said the displays brought him different kinds of information, like the public health office’s presentation on how they trap mosquitoes to test for the Zika virus, or how the alcohol drug prevention treatment team showed some healthier, non-alcoholic alternatives for adults.
“I’m excited to see what the next festival has in store,” said Slaughter. “It’s always refreshing to see the base come together at events like these where everybody has a common goal.”
