Laughlin is hosting a book signing in the base exchange, until June 9, as part of a national book tour.

Retired Army Master Sgt. Steve Newman is signing his two historical fiction novels "The Night Eagles Soared" and "Burnt Yellow and Red" at the BX.

"After retiring from the Army in 2003 and doing some contract work, I began to realize how much I missed being around the military," said Newman. "So my wife suggested that I start pursuing my goals as a writer, and that's what got me started."

Newman served in the U.S. Army Special Forces as a Green Beret and his novels revolve around the individual and team trials faced by a unit while performing operations in Afghanistan.

"I decided on historical fiction as my genre for two reasons," said Newman. "First, these novels are not about me, they are about the military, and I use my experience to help reflect positively on the military. Second, because I am a soldier, not a journalist, these novels are different, because I pulled from my heart to give them emotion and life."

Newman has visited 34 locations so far on his book tour, and Laughlin is one of his last stops in Texas before he continues to the West Coast portion of his tour, which includes New Mexico, Colorado and California.

Visit the base exchange from 9 a.m to 5 p.m to meet Newman.
