Laughlin hosts annual 5K fun run

LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  Laughlin hit the ground running in 2008, as Team XL hosted its annual 5K fun run/race Jan 12.

Refreshed from the holiday break, more than 50 people showed up to participate in the event. "We had a great turn-out," said Lauren Koether, the program director for the 47th Force Support Squadron. "There were 51 people who raced and several folks who came out to cheer them on from the sidelines."

"The race is great way to start-off the new year, getting in the frame of mind to stay fit throughout the remainder of 2008," Mrs. Koether said.

While some were trying to jump-start their New Year's resolutions, others participate in every race the Losano Fitness Center can throw at them. One such runner is Jennifer Johnson, who can be easily picked out in a crowd, as she runs every race pushing her 3-seat stroller. Mrs. Johnson and her husband participate regularly in local and state marathons, making it a true family affair.

"We like to encourage everyone to come out and run, whether it's simply for fun with the family or for the spirit of competition," said Mrs. Koether. "Most of all, we try and encourage newcomers to come and see how much fun we're having. In addition, we give everyone a free t-shirt to remember the event."

The 5K consisted of three different age brackets for both men and women.

Ms. Koether wanted to personally congratulate the winners, but more importantly recognize and applaud all the participants for finishing the race.
