"What is Newton's Second Law," was the first question asked during a science trivia session, before 10 little hands shot up as fast as they could. They all wanted to be the first one chosen to answer the question.

July 20 marked the last day of a week-long program called "Gizmos, Gadgets and Goop," a specialty camp with Science Adventures at Laughlin's youth center.

About 15 children participated in this camp that teaches science lessons about Newton's Laws, friction, energy and how ice cream is made.

"Gizmos, Gadgets and Goop" consisted of children building different parts of a makeshift car everyday in order to learn about elements that would make an actual car move.

Every day they learned something new, and at the end of the week Mr. O2 had a trivia session with the students to find out who could answer the most questions. After choosing prizes from their trivia session, Mr. Hernandez taught them how to make homemade ice cream.

"The kids get to have fun while they learn," said Mr. Oscar Hernandez. "They really love this stuff!"

Mr. Hernandez has been an instructor with the Science Adventure program for nearly eight years. He is among several other instructors who travel to different Air Force bases around the world to conduct these types of programs for young children in the summer.

"Laughlin was a lot of fun," said Mr. Hernandez. "The kids here are great and I really look forward to coming back."

Any child ages five through 12 enrolled in the summer program at Laughlin's youth center is eligible to attend these types of specialty camps such as "Science Adventures" and the "Missoula Performing Arts" August 13-15 for children 6-18 years old.

"Science Adventure camp has been great, I hope the Air Force continues to fund these types of camps for us," said Mr. Reynaldo Torres, youth center director, 47th Force Support Squadron.

Slots are still available for the summer program at the youth center until August 27. Details call 830-298-4187.
