Youth Center offers summer activities

Summer can be the toughest time of the year for parents who want to keep their children occupied.

Luckily, Laughlin's Youth Center has enough activities and events to keep the children busy throughout the summer.

The sports camps, field trips and activities being offered in the coming months are:

The School Age Program: This program is offered year-round but has special hours from June 9 to August 22 for children ages 5 to 12. The hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with breakfast, lunch and a snack provided. This program is open to all active duty, retired, civil service and contractors. Cost is based on annual income and includes plenty of activities for the children, including: Trips to the pool twice a week, trips to the movie theatre on Tuesdays, and a field trip to the San Antonio Zoo June 18.

Summer Extreme Camp: June 9 to August 22 from 7:30 a.m. to noon with breakfast and lunch provided. This camp is $75 weekly and includes any sports camp or field trip offered by the youth center.

Basketball Camp: June 10 to 13 for children ages 5 to 12., will be held at the Losano Fitness Center. Children ages 5 to 8 will practice from 5 to 6 p.m. and children ages 9 to 12 will practice from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The Laughlin Annual Fishing Derby: A free fishing tournament June 11 at the Leaning Pines golf course for children ages 5 and up from 9 to 11 a.m.

America's Kid's Run Summer Bash: Will be held June 14 at 9 a.m. Children ages 5 and 6 will run a half-mile, ages 7 and 8 will run a mile, ages 9 to 12 will run two miles, and ages 13 and up will run a 5K. Adults are welcome to participate. Registration will be that morning at 8:30 a.m. at the commissary.

Sideline Sports Camp: Will be June 16 to June 20 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and will include non-traditional sports such as, water polo, badminton, bocce ball, fencing and ultimate Frisbee. The camp is for children ages 9 and up.

Football and Agility Camp: Will be held June 23 to 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the base track. The camp is open to children ages 9 and up and will cost $35.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas field trip: This trip is scheduled for June 28. The trip costs $65 and will include admission, transportation and a meal voucher. Children must be at least 9 years of age to participate.

iCanvas Camp: Will be held July 8 to 11 and will cost of $25 per youth. Your child will be provided with paint, paint brushes, canvas and instruction.

Volleyball Camp: This camp will be held July 14 to 17 and will help develop volleyball skills for ages 5 and up. The program costs $30.

Archery Camp: Will be held July 21 to 25 from 9 to 11 a.m. Camp is for children ages 9 and up. Cost is $25 per youth.

Schlitterbahn Water Park field trip: Trip is scheduled for July 23. For children ages 13 and up. The $75 fee will cover admission, transportation and a meal voucher.

Wild Week: Will be July 28 to 31 from 8 a.m. to noon. For children ages 9 and up and costs $50 per youth. Each of the four days will have different events including Gross and Grody Day, Fear Factor Day, Team Building Day and Water Day.

Adventure Week: From Aug. 4 to 6 for ages 9 and up. The cost is $160 and includes a day at iFly Austin Indoor Skydiving, a day at the Austin Rock Gym and a trip to Camp Eagle Rock Springs.

Missoula Children's Theater: A traveling theater group that will be at Laughlin Aug. 18 to 23. Youth from kindergarten to 12th grade can audition for a part in the play. Those selected will rehearse for a week with the group before performing "Black Bart the Pirate" Aug. 23.

"Here at the Youth Center we do our best to train our staff to make this a fun but educational environment," said Omar Matos, Laughlin's youth program director. "We put these programs together to keep the children of our community active."
