The 7th annual cardboard boat race and pool party is set to begin Sept. 20 at Laughlin's Friendship Pool from 4 to 8 p.m.

The event, which bolsters teamwork and tests ingenuity, requires teams of four to build a boat constructed from cardboard capable of going one length of the pool's treacherous waters, while supporting the weight of two seamen willing to go down with their ship.

"This is a great, free and fun event for everyone on base to enjoy," said 1st Lt. Jessica Domincovitch, 47th Force Support Squadron outdoor recreation section chief. "There will be free food and drinks, and the pool will be open free of charge after the race for a final time before closing for the season."

Participating teams will be given two rolls of duct tape and their choice of five boxes of various sizes to build their ships with on a first-come, first-serve basis. Teams may buy additional boxes on their own for their boat as long as the boat's length is no more than 10 feet. Teams are also encouraged to personalize their vessels.

"We are hoping to see boats decorated and teams in costume," said Domincovitch. We want teams who are completely invested in their themes."

On race day, the teams must arrive at the pool by 3:30 p.m. with their boats for a pre-race inspection to check for any rule violations, and the race begins at 4 p.m. with each ship's captain and first-mate at the helm.

Prizes will be given out to the teams for the best sink, fastest time and best design.

Teams can register for the race at Laughlin's Outdoor Recreation office, located in the base exchange, Sept. 9 to 13. Teams will be given their construction supplies at sign-up.

"I encourage everyone to sign up and build a boat," said Domincovitch. "Let's get in the water and have some fun."
