Diamondback swim team seeks recruits Published Aug. 21, 2013 By Senior Airman Nathan Maysonet 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Del Rio Diamondbacks swim team is hosting tryouts Aug. 24 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Buena Vista public pool in Del Rio. The Diamondbacks are a USA Swimming competitive team for youths eight to 18 years old that meets year-round and competes monthly in competitions across South Texas. "This is not an instructional course; it's for competitive swimmers," said Lt. Col. Nathan Rought, 96th Flying Training Squadron commander and Diamondback head coach. "The top swimmers swim 15,000 meters a week and spend 10 hours in the pool, so this is a healthy commitment." At the tryouts, swimmers will swim eight to 10 lengths in the pool and demonstrate their ability to perform several different swimming strokes, including freestyle, back stroke, butterfly and breast stroke. "Swimmers must understand these swimming strokes," said Rought. "There're the foundations for teaching them to swim faster." No registration is required for the tryout. Those interested in trying out for the team simply need to attend the meet on Aug. 24 with their swimsuit and goggles. Testing for each swimmer is expected to take between five and 10 minutes, and those selected for the team will begin in mid-September. Team fees, monthly dues, travel expenses and more will be explained at the event, and financial support is available to those that qualify.
