LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Abraham Herrera, 47th Maintenance Directorate aircraft maintenance mechanic, was chosen by wing leadership to be the “XLer” of the week, for the week of Apr. 2, 2018, at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas.
The “XLer” award, presented by Col. Charlie Velino, 47th Flying Training Wing commander, is given to those who consistently make outstanding contributions to their unit and the Laughlin mission.
Herrera helped drive the success of the 87th Flying Training Squadron’s lowest abort rate during training sorties, which went on to be recognized by Air Education and Training Command.
“Do the job right the first time,” Herrera said. “Maintaining a healthy fleet is what our job is all about and providing the safest aircraft for Laughlin.”
He also describes the importance of having pride in one’s work to achieve greater heights with a career, including his achievement of leading other T-38C Talon bases in multiple categories.
“I use my technical knowledge, experience and fortitude and aircraft knowledge to train all personnel,” he said. “This is one of my ways that I assist in keeping aircraft aircrew ready.”
As an active member of the local San Felipe Lion’s Club, he helped raise nearly ten thousand dollars with his fellow members to give scholarships to local community students. Herrera is also involved in his organization’s T-38 booster club, which helps his shop fund morale events like holiday parties and summer picnics.
Herrera credits his resiliency, motivation and success to his family, friends and coworkers who have helped him receive this week’s “XLer” award.
“I want thank all the upper supervision for recognizing my work ethic and the entire T-38 team,” he said. “because that is what we are — a ‘team.’”
