Team XL's Toastmasters organization officially became a Toastmasters charter during a ceremony here Dec. 6.

The organizations area governor and district lieutenant governor traveled to Laughlin to present the club their official certificate and club banner while taking the time to congratulate them on their accomplishment.

"This chartering ceremony fuels us with even more momentum and enthusiasm than ever before," said Valerie Molina, Team XL Toastmasters president. "As a Toastmaster member and president, I fully believe in the program."

While now officially being a charter of the Toastmasters International, the 24 Laughlin members join a worldwide organization of more than 270,000 people.

The club's objectives are to increase someone's self confidence, improve leadership and public speaking skill in a calm environment.

"This initiative fits right into the wing's newest mission statement, developing our Airmen," said Master Sgt. Lyman Howard, Laughlin Toastmasters charter member. "Toastmasters is internationally recognized for just that, communication and leadership development. Our membership is strong, as evident in our membership roster made up of Airmen, military, civilians, contractors and retirees from all over the base and surrounding areas."

Even though TMI was established in the 1920s, Laughlin just recently created a club.

"When Chief Michael King first arrived at Laughlin, he visited the education center," Molina said. "I had the pleasure of meeting him as he toured our facility. One of his questions was, 'Is there a Toastmasters club on the base?' Now, here we are today. Seeing this club grow from a thought to now is exciting."

Chief Master Sgt. Michael King was the 47th Mission Support Group superintendant who is currently deployed to Afghanistan, but brought up the idea to start a club before leaving.

While the club is young and ever growing, Molina said anyone who desires to become a better communicator and more effective leader is welcome.

"At every meeting there are members and guests participating in various roles and conducting speeches. It is exciting seeing each of us grow and we are excited about watching the club grow," she added.

The group is scheduled to meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Anyone interested in joining the club may contact Molina for more details at 830-298-5520
