The first Del Rio Walk for Animals is scheduled to take place Dec. 3 starting at 9 a.m. at Jefferson Park with the hope to raise money for two local animal welfare organizations.

The event will donate the money raised to A Pet's Wish rescue and Friends of Del Rio Animals with the motto of "no more homeless pets".

"I grew up in Minneapolis, Minn., where the humane society there throws a walk for animals that draws thousands of people each year," said Capt. Nicole Jansen, 47th Operations Support Squadron class commander. "I participated in that walk every year since I was 12 until I moved away. When I moved to Del Rio, I saw a lot of stray animals."

She expressed the need to raise awareness about homeless pets and has wanted to play her part since moving here in 2007.

In the U.S., over five million companion animals are admitted to animal shelters every year while three-to-four million of them are euthanized.

"I know there are a lot of animal lovers on base who would love to be involved in this process, but don't necessarily know who to contact or ways to volunteer or donate," Jansen said. "This event will be a great way to link the base community with A Pets Wish, who rescues, fosters and finds homes for 200 animals per year, as well as Friends of Del Rio Animals who provides low-cost spay and neuter clinics for those who would not otherwise be able to afford it."

While the walk is mainly to raise awareness and money, it will also allow people the opportunity to network and find other like-minded people who share a passion for animal rescue.

"This is a great chance to create awareness about the organizations in Del Rio that are doing great work and need support," said Katrina Dennis, A Pets Wish founder. "It also shows me, and the community as a whole, that there are people in Del Rio who care about these animals and are committed to making their lives better."

Both A Pets Wish and Friends of Del Rio Animals are in need of funding for veterinarian bills to care for pets that have been injured or sick, as well as needing vaccinations before the animals are adoptable, Jansen said.

"A Pets Wish is making great strides towards purchasing property for the first ever animal shelter in Del Rio," she said. "They are really close and just need some extra dollars to put them over the edge and make this dream come true."

For those interested in participating in the event, you can register at http://www.firstgiving.com/DRWalkForAnimals/2011 or at 9 a.m. before the walk begins. There is no registration fee but prizes will be given depending on donation amounts.

"I would tell people to put on their most comfortable shoes and come join us," Dennis said. "Leash up your pet if you would like. All are welcome. In doing so, you will be helping us raise money, taking a stand for Del Rio's homeless dogs and cats and letting others know you care and support our cause."
