The Losano Fitness Center received new equipment last week after an Office of the Secretary of Defense funding initiative came to fruition. The funding initiative provided equipment for all Air Force bases.

The fitness center received 25 spin bikes, 12 treadmills, eight traditional fitness bikes, two squat machines and a new cable crossover.

"The equipment that is being replaced was not in bad shape either, but we are of course always looking to upgrade," said Tom Kerr, Fitness Center director. "The old equipment is up to seven years old, but was in great shape due to proper use by personnel and maintenance by fitness center staff," he said.

"The Air Force gives all fitness equipment a life expectancy of five years, but we can expect a longer lifetime given our maintenance history," added Kerr.

Some of the new equipment offers expanded workout options and technical upgrades noted Ray Torres, Laughlin Health and Wellness Center exercise physiologist.

"The new cable crossover and the squat machines offer flexibility for someone's workout. We can perform rehabilitation as well as conventional workouts on the squat machines and an individual can accomplish a total body workout on just the cable crossover," said Torres.

Torres also noted that the equipment offers technical upgrades such as treadmills which now charge and play music from MP3 players and mobile phones as well as send run information to online databases.

Torres reminds everyone that the HAWC provides gait and body composition analysis that compliment individual workout programs that the HAWC can create, this ensures new equipment reaches its full potential.
