Laughlin's Frame and Wood Shop will begin helping kids build boats for a rain gutter derby, scheduled to take place in September, every Saturday morning starting July 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The boat building will take place in Laughlin's woodshop where a professional woodworker will help the kids shape, sand and assemble the boats. The woodshop will provide the tools needed to assemble the boats, but the kids will need to purchase the boat kits from the woodshop for $10.

"The kids won't be using any power equipment since our woodworker will be helping them put the boats together, but they must be accompanied by an adult at all times while they're in the shop," said John Day, Frame and Woodcraft Shop manager.

The kids will be able to take home their boats to paint and decorate any way they like. They will race their boats by blowing them down the length of a 10-foot rain gutter filled with water.

"We will be giving out prizes in September for the winner of the races and for the best looking boat," said Day.

The rain gutter derby will be held in conjunction with Laughlin's Youth Center. The youth center will host the races in September. The specific date and time of the event is still to be determined.

"We encourage kids of all ages to participate. Since this is our first year hosting the event, we want to see what age groups are interested in the derby," said Day.
