The relationship between security forces and firefighters has always been one of friendly competition. The competition was only furthered this week when the 47th Civil Engineer Squadron defeated the 47th Security Forces Squadron/Force Support Squadron 17 to 12 in the Laughlin intramural softball league championship game June 28.

"Firemen and cops have always had a rivalry. It is fitting that we faced each other," said Olin Jensen, Laughlin Fire Station chief and team captain of the 47th CES team.

Even though the final score was 17 to 12, both teams showed sportsmanship by remaining positive when the game ended.

Although the 47th CES won the championship, the other eight teams did not leave empty handed. Those who participated in the league walked away with some invaluable lessons and friendships, they said.

"Sports build friendships and teach you how to win, and more importantly how to deal with failure," said Jensen.

The league also has a way of inciting friendships because different base agencies have the opportunity to work together.

"Participating in a league like this allows others to network outside of their squadron, which can assist later when missions cross," said Michael Palazuelos, Youth Center administrative assistant and 47th SFS/FSS team captain.

Although Jensen and Palazuelos represented opposing teams, they held similar views about the significance of the league. They agreed that the league brings teams together to accomplish a similar goal.

The teams in the intramural softball league consisted of officers, enlisted and civilian players. The impressive thing about the sport was that all players were able to enjoy the game without worrying about work or rank, they said.

"For the past four months, we had something else to talk about, not just work. It's a release from the norm. For the hour that we are playing, we can forget about everything else, relax and just play," said Palazuelos.

Both team captains also agreed that teamwork, hard work and dedication are what led teams to success this season.

"Security Forces gave us a heck of a fight, they are a good team and we look forward to next year," said Jensen.
