Drug Education for Youth program to hold July camp

LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  Laughlin's Drug Education for Youth program starts their annual summer leadership camp July 19.

"This camp's target population is Department of Defense dependents of active duty military, reservists and federal civilian employees," said Anthony McKinney, director of DEFY.

DEFY is a two-phase self esteem-building program that provides kids with the tools they need to resist drugs, gangs and alcohol.

"We will spend most of our time covering the required topics, but in a fun way," said Mr. McKinney.

There are four teaching categories: self-management skills, drug resistance and information skills, general social skills and physical fitness, completing Phase I.

Phase II will begin August 21 and meet the third Saturday of each month afterward.

"The mentors are required to be part of Phase II as we take on projects, go on educational trips and provide tutoring support for the youth throughout the school year," said Mr. McKinney.

Phase II will end with a graduation ceremony.

"Most participants gain a great deal from the DEFY experience. They make lasting friendships and learn a lot about themselves," said Mr. McKinney.

Upon graduation, youth are matched with organizations that help them meet their goals.

Adult volunteers have several requirements they must meet. They must be at least 18 years old, submit an application with supervisor approval forms for active duty personnel and undergo complete background checks.

"We will also interview them to pick the most appropriate from the list of applicants," said Mr. McKinney.

Active duty mentors will also need to request permissive Temporary Duty for the Phase I Leadership Camp July 19- 28. They will receive required training on topics such as child abuse and neglect, basic first aid and communication skills. Throughout the DEFY program, coordinators, camp directors, team leaders and mentors actively encourage parents or guardians to become engaged in supporting their children's commitment to a positive, drug-free lifestyle.

"We are conducting the DEFY camp for the seventh consecutive year. We will continue to work hard to make it a successful program with your support and participation. We only have room for 20 youth who are 9 to 12 years old," said Mr. McKinney.

In order to sign up, parents must go to the 47th Medical Group Clinic, Building #375, Room #179 (Drug Demand Reduction Office) in the clinic to complete an application for their child.

The youth and staff will gather daily at Laughlin's Chapel parking lot at 7:15 a.m. and will be picked up at 4:30 p.m. The camp site will be Ft. Clark Springs in Bracketville, Texas, which is 30 miles east of Del Rio on Highway 90.
