47th CES beats 47th MSS 7-6, takes intramural championship Published Dec. 19, 2006 By 2nd Lt. Courtney Kippenberger 47th FTW Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AFB, TEXAS -- More than 60 people gathered Tuesday night to watch as the 47th Civil Engineering Squadron beat out the 47th Mission Support Squadron for the championship title with a score of 7-6. "Our game plan was to rely on our defense. We went into the game wanting to keep the other team on their toes and we felt that was our defense was our strongest point," Staff Sgt. Cesar Torres, coach for the 47th MSS team said. Scoring the only touchdown in the first half, the MSS team led 6-0 at halftime. "When we were down by six, we realized that we needed to concentrate and pay attention. We decided not to worry about the score, and to start playing to win," said Staff Sgt. Jeremy James, assistant coach for the 47th CE team. With less than minute in the game, and the crowd on the edge of their seats, CE scored a touchdown and extra point, putting them in the lead by one. With little time left, the 47th MSS team attempted to make a comeback, but with no success. "It was the perfect way to end our undefeated season and it just shows how all of our hard work and practice paid off," said Sgt. James. Although their season did not end with a victory, Sgt. Torres was confident that they will play again next year. "For a couple of guys getting together, making it to the championship isn't such a bad deal," said Sgt. Torres.
