Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas --
Fire Prevention Week is in full swing here at Laughlin Air Force Base and is themed "Hear the beep where you sleep."
From Oct. 4 to Oct. 10, Fire Prevention Week stresses the importance of having a working smoke alarm in every bedroom.
"Half of all U.S. home fire deaths occur at night between the hours of 11:00 pm and 7:00 am, when people are most likely to be sleeping. Having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half," according to National Fire Protection Association statistics.
Laughlin has a series of events planned that will demonstrate the importance of fire safety by providing safety tips, training, and instruction on how to use household firefighting equipment such as portable fire extinguishers.
"The benefit of Fire Prevention Week is that it gives local fire departments a chance to interact and engage with their communities and provide guidance about various fire safety subjects; all with the hope that homes will be made safer," said Paul Gentile, 47th Civil Engineer Squadron assistant chief of fire prevention.
