Family Advocacy raises Child Abuse Awareness this month Published April 7, 2014 By 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- April is a month set aside to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse. Laughlin's Airman and Family Readiness Center members have several activities planned this month in support of Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month with the theme "Putting Our Families First." This month-long event will start off with a Mother and Daughter Tea Party on April 5 at Club XL. This event will give mothers and daughters the opportunity to have "girl time" in their Sunday best. This free event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will have finger foods, fun activities, dessert, crafts and a special photo opportunity. Seating is limited. Sunday, April 6, will be "Blue Sunday" when people of all faiths can join together in a day of prayer to show their support for children and families who have been affected by abuse and to honor those who help abused or neglected children. The following weekend will be an opportunity for fathers and sons to bond at the Father and Son Bowling tournament. The tournament will be held April 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Entry and lunch will be free for participants. To finish off the month, teens will get the opportunity to write an essay on why their parents are the best. The essays will be entered into the Best Parents Essay Writing Contest no later than April 22, and the winner will be announced at a pizza party April 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Stripes. There will be free pizza and sodas for all participants and their nominated parents.
