Outdoor Recreation helps get you outdoors Published Jan. 17, 2014 By 2nd Lt. William M. Tyrrell 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, TEXAS -- Explore San Antonio or Del Rio from an outdoorsman point of view by letting Laughlin Outdoor Recreation center give you the equipment necessary. "We offer programs and equipment for the base populous used to re-energize and re-vitalize after a stressful duty day or week," said Fernando Brown, 47th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation manager. "We ensure that everyone has the opportunity to decompress and to be exposed of recreational opportunities." Outdoor Recreation staff offers equipment for rental or loan like bounce houses, mountain bikes, camping equipment and more. On base, the Outdoor Recreation also has horse stables, a family camp and recreational vehicle storage. "We also handle bookings for use of the paintball field, trap and skeet range," said Brown. "Since there is no community center on base, we also coordinate the self-guided trips such as shopping at the malls in San Antonio, theme park shuttles and more." The Outdoor Recreation center also holds numerous events every year. "We are doing our best to try to offer at least two to three main activities a month," said Sarah Stani, 47th FSS Outdoor Recreation assistant. "Some of the activities we are going to be offering are kayaking, climbing and more." By having the Outdoor Recreation services, airmen are able to save money by renting or loaning the equipment at a low cost. "A lot of the stuff we offer in the way of equipment rental and loan isn't even available off base," said Brown. "People could save about $500 by renting bikes and camping equipment instead of paying hundreds of dollars to own them." Despite offering many services and equipment, the Outdoor Recreation staff keeps an open mind on how to help the airman. "I am proud of the work that the staff here is doing by trying to get people excited about the services we offer," said Brown. "We are really focusing on trying to be flexible and ready to meet all of the airman's needs." For more information, call Outdoor Recreation at 298-5830.
