Laughlin observes its own for Memorial Day
“It’s been a tough 18 months for Team XL,” said Col. Lee Gentile, 47th Flying Training Wing commander, as he contemplated the wing’s preparation for a memorial service for 2nd Lt. Kristofer Saenz, who was killed in a car accident May 18, 2019. “We’ve lost four vital members in about 18 months. That is never easy for a small wing like ours to handle,” he said.
Benjamin Rawald named Air Force Military Child of the Year
Nominated twice before, Benjamin Rawald from Del Rio, Texas, was named the 2019 Air Force Military Child of the Year Award. Benjamin, a 17-year-old junior, has dedicated years of effort with the Boy Scouts of America, which has brought him to the attention of the community and the nation.

Laughlin to host 2020 Fiesta of Flight Air and Space Expo
As a “thank you” for the outstanding support from Del Rio and the surrounding community, Laughlin Air Force Base will host an open house and air show, Saturday, March 14, 2020. The one day event will be headlined by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team.

David Mercer, a 47th Maintenance Directorate fabrication work lead, was chosen by wing leadership to be the “XLer” of the week, for the week of Jan. 21, 2019, at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. Community and base members gathered to dedicate the Science Technology Engineering Mechanics elementary school to Roberto (Bobby) Barrera at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, on Jan. 18, 2019. Barrera, an educator, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam, and a community member whose sacrifice for his country was great, gave his name to the school and spoke about his life experience and his will to live and do good.

November 11—millions across the United States honor the 1 percent who swore to defend the Constitution of the United States and the freedoms every citizen enjoys. That tradition is no exception for Laughlin Air Force, Base, Texas, and the local community of Del Rio, Texas, who got together to celebrate all who have served through the town’s tradition of a Veteran’s Day Parade. The parade contained many floats featuring not only representatives of Laughlin, but also various veterans’ organizations, vans and ROTC units.
