  • Hispanic Heritage month at Laughlin

    Since the signing of the bill by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, America observed National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, to celebrate the contributions and culture of citizens of Latin American descent. While it may seem counterintuitive to spread a heritage month across multiple months, the mid-September start date was chosen to commemorate several pivotal moments in Latin American history. Five Latin American countries, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, celebrate their Independence Day on the 15th. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on the 16th, and Chile on 18th.
  • Herschel Walker visits Laughlin Air Force Base

    Team XL had the pleasure to host retired professional athlete Herschel Walker, best known for his football legacy. The renowned competitor visited Laughlin Air Force Base on Aug. 18th, 2021 to discuss mental health resilience and the importance of self-care. Mr. Walker uses his own mental health journey to eliminate the stigma attached to asking for help when necessary before it is too late. Mental health issues have plagued a number of those who served in the armed forces. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, 6,435 veterans took their own lives in 2018.
  • Laughlin Switches Main Gate

    Laughlin’s residents and employees will be making adjustments to their daily commutes after the West Gate closed July 17, 2021 to allow for construction to get underway on several site upgrades on our gate infrastructure. Base access is limited to the North Gate for the duration of the project which is expected to last up to 60 days.

    Juneteenth National Independence Day, as of June 17, 2021, was signed into law by President Joe Biden as a federal holiday that recognizes the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas after the surrender of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. During this historical moment, Union general Gordon Granger informed the people of their freedom and the end of the Civil War with the issue of the General Order No. 3.
  • Arrest of tutor

    Yesterday June 17th 2021, there was an arrest of a tutor assigned to the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District’s Roberto “Bobby” Barrera Elementary School, located on Laughlin AFB. We are working closely with the school district and the Department of Homeland Security who is leading the on-going investigation. We have made all of our law enforcement capabilities available to the school district and investigators.

  • Laughlin performs at Wings Over South Texas

    Laughlin graced the skies over Corpus Christi Texas with one of the most unique formations that can be flown. Laughlin pilots had the honor to represent the base and Air Force at the Wings Over South Texas air show. The Formation flown is known as a dissimilar formation. “Dissimilar formation is any formation that consists of two or more different types of aircraft. For Laughlin, we used to fly a 3-ship dissimilar formation for graduation flybys,” said Maj Martin Garrett, 86th Flying Training Squadron chief pilot. “These flights would consist of one T-1, one T-6, and one T-38. We added an additional 3 aircraft for our 6-ship dissimilar formation for more of a wow factor.”
