Laughlin Hunting Program re-opens

LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --

Hunting season opened on Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, Dec. 19, 2015, for the first time in approximately two years through Laughlin’s Outdoor Recreation Office.

Hunting is available to those who have base access, as long as a few other stipulations are met.

“Members looking to hunt will have to attend a safety briefing, pass the Texas Hunter’s Safety Education Course, obtain a base hunting license and reserve a blind before hunting,” said 1st Lt. Jay Goold, 47th Student Squadron.

The Laughlin Hunting Program is a new opportunity that was organized by a group of students from the 47th STUS and will be closely monitored for more possibilities of growth and development.

“This activity is something for base personnel and their families to enjoy,” said Fernando Brown, Laughlin’s Outdoor Recreation manager. “If this season is successful, then we have the possibility to develop the program further.”

Even though the program is a new opportunity for families to enjoy the outdoors, safety and compliance are the main concerns of Laughlin leaders.

“Safety, security and compliance were the biggest priorities with this program,” said Col. Thomas Shank, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. “We wanted to give members of the Team XL community another program to improve quality of life while ensuring the safety of flight operations, but we wanted to do it the right way.”
