Why he XLed: As a unit environmental team member, Torres-Ortiz devoted 20 hours to identify an oil leak, preventing costly fines by environmental agencies. Torres-Ortiz aided flight line inspections, ensuring nothing is breaking environmental regulations. He assisted in more than 90 equipment inspections; he quality checked 45 items and found 60 errors, vital to Laughlin’s 600 pilots’ safety. Torres-Ortiz is his squadron’s prime explosive and munition authority, and his inspections helped maintain the $120,000 program, vital to more than 3,200 aircrew flight equipment orders.  Lastly, he headed his unit’s secure data back-up, transferring important records of more than 3,000 flight equipment items, and exceeding the set standards and requirements.
