LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- In a bid to enhance the leadership of students enrolled in the specialized undergraduate pilot training program, the 47th Student Squadron recently made Tech. Sgt. Janine White, the 47th Operations Support Squadron radar and weather systems NCO in-charge, the STUS’ first sergeant—a new position itself.
The new program helps officers by exposing them to resources they will see the operational Air Force, along with familiarizing them with the enlisted force, according to White.
“The exposure to the enlisted side of the house during training begins strong, but quickly thins out—especially during the pilot training period,” she said. “It helps them not only with the functions a first sergeant serves, but it grows them as a more rounded officer and leader.”
As a first sergeant in function, White also wears dual hats: the first sergeant of the STUS and the NCO in charge of RAWS. Her goal is to help leaders lead and Airmen to complete the mission, by being the strong administrative backbone they need to get back out producing pilots for the Air Force.
“While flight commanders are learning how to utilize a first sergeant, I’m learning how to get them to release responsibility so I can take whatever task on for them, and give them more time back,” she said “It’s important because I believe that if you take care of the Airmen, they’ll take care of the mission, and my goal has always been to take care of the people.”
