7/21/2006 - LAUGHLIN AFB, TEXAS -- Laughlin has been selected as the 2006 winner of the Best Recycling Event for the State of Texas.

Laughlin's "America Recycles Day," held Nov. 15, 2005, beat entire cities, universities and state-wide organizations for the award, which will be presented August 30 in Corpus Christi.

David Morin, Laughlin's pollution prevention manager, said winning the contest was humbling.

"There were more than 170 events registered in the competition, and the fact that we were the best overall is pretty cool," Mr. Morin, who was also the event organizer, said.

Mr. Morin said when putting the event together, he kept in mind that he wanted it to be fun as well as educational.

"Events like this make it easier to get people into recycling," he said. "Mainly, we wanted to target new recyclers."

This is not the first time Laughlin has been recognized for its conservation programs. In 2003, Team XL won an award for its outstanding solid waste integration program.

Laughlin hosts two environmental events each year.

"One is Tree City USA for Earth/Arbor Day, and the other is America Recycles Day in November," Ramon Flores, Laughlin's environmental flight chief said.

Mr. Morin said the event wouldn't have been the success it was without the help of the 47th Services Division, all the volunteers who came out to help, the Fiesta Center staff and the local Goodwill chapter. Air Education and Training Command also provided funding for the event.

The program was only open to base residents, Mr. Flores said, because there would be no way to judge off-base participation.

Mr. Flores said there will be another recycling event this year, most likely sometime in November.
